*Accessible Art Fair is held twice a year and connects artists, many previously unknown, with the art-loving public. The fair in 2010 had 55 artists and more than 3,000 visitors.
Our speaker:
Stephanie Manasseharrived in Brussels from Montreal, via Prague and Milan, in 2004.
The idea of founding the Accessible Art fair grew bit by bit,’ says Stephanie. ‘In Milan I discovered that I enjoyed organising events. And I imbibed my passion for art with my mother’s milk: she is an artist herself. I was pregnant soon after arriving in Brussels. I joined the Brussels Childbirth Trust, an English speaking group for women who are pregnant or have just given birth. I met with women from the group and showed them my mother’s works of art. It really hit the target. It was clear that lots of expats were looking for original works of art that were not too expensive to liven up their homes. But not many people have the time to comb the galleries. I thought there must be a simpler way to bring them into contact with art. And that’s how the Brussels Accessible Art fair came about.’
The word ‘accessible’ was chosen quite deliberately,’ Stephanie explains. ‘We try to make it an accessible event in every way: the prices are reasonable (between 50 and 3000 euro), it is centrally located, admission is free and the artists themselves offer some explanation of their work.’
‘It all started on a very small scale. I was able to assemble a small group of artists, friends of friends. It wasn’t hard to persuade people to join in the project, as there are quite a few expat artists in Brussels. They are brimming with talent, but aren’t familiar with the channels and places in Brussels to show and sell their work. In 2007 I organised the first event at a venue near the place Jourdan. It was a huge success: we had 700 visitors in a single weekend. I repeated the event in 2008. By that time I had 20 artists under my wing and over 1500 visitors. Since then, the Brussels Accessible Art Fair has never stopped growing."
